Epispadias is a rare congenital anomaly in which the urethra opens onto the dorsal aspect of the penis in boys and is often displaced anteriorly in girls. Commonly associated with the exstrophy-epispadias-complex (ECC), isolated epispadias occurs less frequently. The diagnosis of epispadias is based on the physical exam, but additional diagnostic testing may be required as part of a comprehensive workup. Operative intervention is always required, but surgical approaches differ depending on additional pathology, patient anatomy, and surgical preference. Treatment goals include restoration of cosmesis, urinary continence, and sexual function.This activity promotes a more in-depth understanding of epispadias, including the embryologic pathology, the associated spectrum of anomalies, and options for surgical correction. It also highlights key elements in the immediate and long-term care of individuals with epispadias. The pivotal role of an interprofessional healthcare team is emphasized.
