The leading cause of post neonatal mortality is sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). Epidemiological studies have revealed modifiable risk factors that may contribute to SUID, promoting public health advocates have circulated recommendations based on prevention. The recommendations for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB), and other sleep-related deaths are based on a detailed and impartial analysis of the evidence available on all aspects of infant sleep safety. With greater recognition of sleep-related causes of death other than SIDS, the recommendations are now broader in scope and address characteristics of the sleep environment and location, in addition to sleep position.
