Background: ERAS protocols were initially created for patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Implementation of comprehensive perioperative care pathways for these patients resulted in a variety of benefits including decreased hospital length of stay, a reduction in surgical complications and associated decreased costs of care. ERAS protocols are also now established targeting other surgical patient populations and most recently Otolaryngology surgical patient ERAS pathways are under development.
Objectives: After completion of this activity the learner should understand the benefits of ERAS protocols and some components that might comprise an ERAS protocol for a Head & Neck cancer patients.
Method: This PMP module guides the learner through an oropharyngeal patient’s diagnosis and care pathway with focus on the elements of pain control and nutrition management. The scenario is within the context of identifying components of an ERAS protocol.
