Evaluation and Management of Pediatric Chronic Cough (AMW2023)

Evaluation and Management of Pediatric Chronic Cough (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Chronic cough, or cough persisting for more than four weeks, is a common chief complaint in the pediatric population. Prevalence in school aged-children is as high as 10.4%. It can be a significant source of both patient and parental stress. From school to sleep, it can also substantially impact quality of life for this patient population. Diagnosis and management of pediatric cough differs from that of adult cough and affected children are often referred to multiple sub-specialties, including pulmonology, gastroenterology, and otolaryngology. There are many potential causes for this disease entity, including asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, irritable larynx, and reflux. Workup, including imaging and endoscopy, can be extensive and invasive, and management strategies vary widely and can include surgical intervention. This panel aims to provide pediatric and comprehensive otolaryngologists with strategies to help evaluate and treat this patient population. Panelists will discuss current literature, provide insight on the utility of in-office laryngoscopy and operative intervention, and offer algorithms for management. Panelists include a dual-fellowship trained pediatric otolaryngologist and laryngologist with a clinical focus on pediatric laryngeal disorders, a pediatric otolaryngologist who specializes in airway and sinus disorders, and a pediatric airway surgeon who specializes in treatment of complex airway disorders.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Define tools and approaches an otolaryngologist can use to diagnose and manage potential causes of pediatric chronic coughOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Analyze effectiveness of current otolaryngologic treatment strategies for chronic coughOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Develop a pediatric chronic cough management algorithm for all otolaryngologistsBACKGROUND STATEMENT: Need to review effective diagnosis and management strategies for pediatric chronic cough, a common yet burdensome and difficult-to-treat entity.
