Expanding Humanitarian Medical Educational Outreach Using Bidirectional Approaches (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Increasingly, training programs around the globe are developing collaborative medical educational programs that include opportunities for trainees to receive experiences outside the usual confines of their home training program. In the past, these experiences were mainly unidirectional. A significant challenge to creating effective and sustainable global medical educational collaborations is ensuring ongoing training options that also provide a global perspective in approach. A bi-directional or a trainee swap between home and collaborative countries is an effective way to train medical providers. To be successful, appropriate input from both training programs is required in developing processes, as well as setting expectations, and developing competency metrics. This seminar will address issues central to the development of bi-directional global education programs and provide a guide to allow educators to successfully implement this type of educational activity.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: 1) How to gauge educational needs in global programs.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: 2) Discuss pros/cons of bi-directional educational opportunities.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: 3) How to implement/sustain these programs.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Global education requires multiple approaches to optimize medical training, particularly in the developing world. One effective method is a trainee exchange or the use of a bi-directional approach whereby trainees are not only taught in their home country, but in the visiting country as well.
