Chronic widespread pain (CWP) affects 10-15% of the general population and causes physical and psychological distress, losses of function, quality of life, employment and income, and prolonged litigation for many. Fibromyalgia (FM) affects 4-6% of the population but CWP also impacts other rheumatic diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, chronic low back pain and lupus. This talk presents a clinical approach to diagnosing FM, the pathogenesis of centralized pain, management principles for CWP and specific treatment approaches for FM.
