Finding Balance: Intraoperative Teaching for Busy Anesthesiologists

Finding Balance: Intraoperative Teaching for Busy Anesthesiologists

Teaching in the operating room is a challenging task. As anesthesiology faculty, we have all been taught a myriad of anesthetic techniques and patient considerations. However, few of us have been taught how to effectively teach residents. This RSS will provide semi-structured group discussions during the course to foster peer support among all participating faculty anesthesiologists. Topics discussed will include intraoperative resident autonomy and resident feedback strategies and how they relate common teaching stressors and patient care challenges seen when working with residents. By participating in this activity, participants will be able to: – Utilize guiding principles regulating intraoperative resident autonomy. – Apply characteristics of effective resident feedback for formative assessments. – Demonstrate practical intraoperative resident feedback strategies. – Recognize the variety of ways faculty incorporate intraoperative autonomy and feedback strategies when working with residents. – Recognize the variety of ways faculty cope with common patient care challenges seen when working with residents.
