From Hearing Aid to ABI (Auditory Brainstem Implant) (2022 AMW)

The management of hearing loss has suffered an impressive evolution in the last four decades. Whereas in 1980 the only available options for the hearing impaired patient were conventional analogic hearing aids or surgical management of otosclerosis and chronic ear diseases, forty years later we have a wide range of different options. These include hearing aids, bone conduction devices, middle ear implants, cochlear implants (CI), and auditory brainstem implants (ABI). The evolution in this field seems to be limited only by technological factors. This course deals with the indications, basic surgical technique, and results of each one of the aforementioned options, emphasizing the evolution of the management of hearing loss over the last years. The course is based on the personal experience of the authors. General concepts about implantable auditory devices will be explained. Clinical cases with comprehensive videos will be shown in a step-by-step basis to illustrate the usefulness of every option. Controversial topics such as non-implantable bone conduction devices, CI in patients with cochlear malformations, deciding intraoperatively between CI and ABI in limit cases, or the surgical approach for ABI in children will be specifically addressed. Between hearing aids and ABI there is a real world of options. Taking the right choice is in our hands
