The goal of this activity is to improve preoperative evaluation of surgical patients. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinicians will be better able to:
1. Use assessment tools to calculate patient risk for postoperative cardiac and pulmonary complications.
2. Differentiate patients whose risk profiles dictate administration of a preoperative stress test from those deemed low risk via clinical assessment.
3. Compare and contrast the effects of β-blockers, aspirin, and statins on potential risks for cardiac complications after surgery.
4. Relate a patient’s functional status to their risk for complications after surgery.
5. Implement preoperative strategies to decrease risk of pulmonary complications after surgery.
