Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Manifestations of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 is an acute viral illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 primarily affects the respiratory system but can affect other major organ systems, such as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the liver. Published data shows that patients can present with GI systems both with the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms. Patients with any primary GI-related symptoms or concurrent symptoms were at increased risk of hospitalization, especially those with elevated liver enzymes. The prothrombotic state associated with COVID-19 can also manifest in thrombotic complications. This activity illustrates the incidence, evaluation, and management of the GI and liver manifestations of  COVID-19. It also highlights the role of the interprofessional team in improving care for patients with this illness.
