Genitofemoral neuralgia is a chronic neuropathic pain condition resulting from direct damage or compression of the genitofemoral nerve, commonly occurring after inguinal hernia surgery. This condition manifests as persistent pain or discomfort along the superior inguinal ligament, radiating to the anterior thigh and genitals, accompanied by numbness or heightened sensitivity in the distribution of the genitofemoral nerve. Diagnosing genitofemoral neuralgia is challenging due to the close anatomical relationship and overlapping cutaneous innervation with the ilioinguinal nerve, necessitating a thorough patient history and physical examination for an accurate diagnosis. Specific nerve blocks can help differentiate between the genitofemoral and ilioinguinal nerves.Topical therapy with capsaicin, lidocaine, and menthol is usually the initial treatment, along with medications such as gabapentin, pregabalin, amitriptyline, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and tramadol. Injections with steroids and local anesthetics are also considered first-line pharmacological management for neuropathic pain due to genitofemoral neuralgia. Surgical alternatives should be considered if symptoms do not improve after 6 to 12 months. This activity discusses the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, and both medical and surgical management of genitofemoral neuralgia, emphasizing the importance of an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals to enhance patient outcomes. This activity provides healthcare professionals with insights into the latest diagnostic criteria, treatment options, and management strategies for genitofemoral neuralgia. Additionally, this activity highlights the role of a collaborative care model in ensuring comprehensive management and improving the quality of care for patients with this condition.
