Headache with neurological deficits and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) lymphocytosis (also known as HaNDL syndrome) is a migraine-like headache associated with aphasia and sensory and motor deficits. This is a rare self-limiting disease with single to multiple episodes. Although patients are usually symptomless between the episodes, the neurologic deficits can last up to 7 weeks. Compared to long-lasting neurological deficits, recovery is possible and is not considered permanent. However, the rule-out process is extensive, given the similarity to several neurological conditions. This activity describes the evaluation and treatment of HaNDLE syndrome and reviews the role of the healthcare team in improving care for patients with this condition. Participating clinicians gain an understanding of a lesser-known syndrome that may overlap in emergency medicine, primary care, and neurology.
