Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn is a condition where fetal red blood cells are destroyed due to blood group incompatibility, primarily involving Rh or ABO blood types. Rh incompatibility usually affects subsequent pregnancies because maternal sensitization occurs during the first pregnancy, leading to more severe complications such as intrauterine hydrops fetalis in later pregnancies. ABO incompatibility, however, can impact the first pregnancy since maternal antibodies preexist. The disease manifests in newborns with symptoms such as lethargy, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, and, in severe cases, signs of hydrops fetalis. Diagnosis can occur before or after birth through laboratory tests and imaging studies, and treatments range from phototherapy and supplementation to transfusions in severe cases. The prevention of Rh alloimmunization in Rh-negative pregnant women is critical, while ABO incompatibility often follows a milder course, typically not requiring prophylactic immunoglobulin treatment.Participants in this course gain essential knowledge in selecting the appropriate diagnostic tests, managing the condition, and implementing preventive measures for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. The course emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and treatment and the crucial role of preventing Rh alloimmunization. Through collaboration with an interprofessional team, including obstetricians, pediatricians, hematologists, and nurses, healthcare professionals can ensure comprehensive care for affected mothers and newborns.
