HFE-related Hemochromatosis: A Common, Treatable Genetic Condition

HFE-related Hemochromatosis: A Common, Treatable Genetic Condition

Hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder of iron absorption causing increased iron accumulation. Given the body s inability to regulate iron excretion, excess iron is stored in multiple organs throughout the body. Clinical manifestations vary, ranging from asymptomatic to severe liver failure and end-organ damage. HFE gene related hemochromatosis is the most common autosomal recessive disease in the Caucasian population. Initial common symptoms such as joint pain and lethargy may make early diagnosis difficult.
