Unprecedented escalating rates of maternal mortality in the United States have brought forth urgent attention from obstetric safety leaders. Hypertension now remains at the forefront of current national efforts to improve obstetrical safety. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy pose a threat to both mother and fetus and are a leading cause of maternal mortality globally and within the United States. They complicate up to 22% of all pregnancies and account for approximately 16% of maternal deaths in the United States. Early recognition of hypertension is crucial to the prevention of maternal stroke and death.
This course addresses startling statistics surrounding the topic of hypertension and key aspects of hypertension in pregnancy. We will also focus on areas of particular clinical risk to women with these conditions. After completing this activity, practitioners/members of the healthcare team should be able to: articulate correct nomenclature regarding gestational hypertension and preeclampsia; differentiate gestational hypertension from preeclampsia using updated ACOG definitions and supporting research; recognize important maternal early warning signs/symptoms and critical blood pressure values that can assist in the prevention of maternal mortality; and discuss the complexities of achieving an accurate diagnosis.
