The goal of this program is to improve the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) using hypertonic therapy and the clinical assessment of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH). After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Elaborate on the current understanding of hypertonic therapy for patients with TBI.
2. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using hyper-tonic therapy or mannitol in patients with TBI.
3. Recognize the disadvantages of using urea therapy for TBI, particularly intracerebral brain hemorrhage.
4. Identify the risk factors for PSH.
5. Select appropriate pharmacologic agents for treating PSH.
