Hypothyroidism: Treatment Basics and Nuances

Hypothyroidism: Treatment Basics and Nuances

Hypothyroidism is a common disease state, affecting about 5% of Americans ages 12 and older. Thyroid dysfunction can lead to serious health problems, including cardiovascular and neuromuscular conditions, as well as cognitive issues. The disease is especially likely in patients over the age of 60, and therefore particularly important to consider within the Veterans Affairs system as nearly 49% of Veterans are over the age of 65. Pharmacists are in an especially unique position to assist patients with hypothyroidism to meet their clinical goals. However, further education is warranted to allow pharmacists to incorporate prescribing and monitoring of medications for hypothyroidism in clinical practice. The goal of this live-virtual, knowledge based training, is to build upon clinical pharmacists knowledge to improve the safe prescribing and monitoring of the medications used to treat hypothyoidism. This course will primarily utilize the 2014 American Thyroid Association Guidelines for the Treatment of Hypothyroidism. Additionally, this course will use a combination of knowledge-based didactic instruction questions and case-based application to improve and reinforce knowledge of hypothyroidism.
