It is entirely likely that a healthcare provider will encounter a victim of IPV in their practice, and may, in fact, regularly encounter them. Over 10 million women and men in the United States experience physical violence each year by a current or former intimate partner. There are a number of forms of intimate partner violence (IPV); IPV includes rape, non-rape sexual assault, physical assault, psychological or emotional abuse, and stalking perpetrated by current and former dates, spouses, and/or cohabiting partners.
In this activity, we focus on the specific issues related to IPV. These issues are different in many ways than the issues associated with child or elder abuse, especially with regard to intervention and reporting suspicions of abuse to authorities. This activity will cover recognizing the victim of IPV, interventions, barriers to treatment and documentation of care. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: distinguish the signs and symptoms of intimate partner violence and abuse; justify interventions that can be taken as well as interventions that should not be taken in patients with suspected intimate partner violence; and summarize the barriers for both providers and patients in recognizing and dealing with intimate partner violence.
