The goal of this program is to improve emergency department (ED) medical clearance of patients with psychiatric illnesses. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to: 1. Analyze the role of physical medical conditions in patients with severe and persistent mental illness. 2. Identify disparities associated with treatment of patients with mental illness in the ED and hospital. 3. Refine physical examination and diagnostic testing strate gies for patients presenting to the ED with mental illness. 4. Recognize the limitations of institutions for mental diseases. 5. Use structural algorithms to improve medical clearance for patients with mental illness.
