Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbals, and other natural products typically promoted as having favorable health benefits and outcomes yet the actual supporting evidence remains limited. Randomized trials are uniquely positioned to evaluate the potential causal roles of dietary supplements on clinical outcomes, but not every dietary supplement has such evidence. Further, some dietary supplements may present risks for patients. We will examine several commonly used dietary supplements for their effects on health outcomes, and consider current guidelines to support evidence-based decisions whether patients should incorporate dietary supplements as part of preventive care.
