Management of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss involves considering various factors such as age, degree of hearing loss, unilateral versus bilateral, and others. All children with hearing loss should be fitted with appropriate amplification as soon as possible after diagnosis (no later than six months of age). However, management does not end there. Comprehensive management of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss can vary, and surveillance protocols may depend on the provider and/or institution’s practices. There are currently no clear guidelines for frequency and types of testing, including auditory and speech and language assessments. Pediatric hearing loss must be managed by a team of providers, including otolaryngologists, audiologists, and speech therapists who can work together for long-term continuity of care and help transition the need for surgical intervention if the need arises. This session will discuss various protocols for the management and surveillance of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss after the initial fitting of the hearing aid. Recently published literature on minimum testing battery for cochlear implant candidacy, Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) recommendations on surveillance of patients with congenital CMV, and other relevant topics will be discussed. The moderator and panelists are neurotologists, pediatric otolaryngologists, and audiologists with considerable clinical and research experience on this topic. Audience polling will be used to understand current practice patterns amongst attendees, followed by a discussion of management amongst panelists.
