Prescribing controlled dangerous substances for pain and other conditions is a major focus of both the medical community and legislatures throughout the country. The consequences of the use and abuse of controlled dangerous substances (CDS) are in the news on a daily basis. La. R.S. 40:978.3 requires new CDS prescribers to view a three-hour continuing education program on best practices for prescribing CDSs, drug diversion prevention and appropriate treatment for addiction prior to licensure from the Board of Pharmacy. This course includes separate sections on each of these topics along with the appropriate laws to meet the Louisiana requirements.
