Lymphocytic esophagitis (LE) is a subtype of chronic esophagitis characterized by the infiltration of intraepithelial lymphocytes within the esophagus. LE most commonly presents in middle-aged women as dysphagia, dyspepsia, nausea, or chest pain. The etiology and pathophysiology of LE remain poorly defined. Diagnosing LE requires an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with esophageal biopsies; LE is a histologic diagnosis. The therapeutic management of LE is similar to the management of eosinophilic esophagitis. This activity reviews the hypothesized etiology and pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of LE and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with this rare subtype of chronic esophagitis.
