Management of Pediatric Aerodigestive Tract Foreign Bodies (2022 AMW)

Foreign bodies of the upper aerodigestive tract are commonly seen by both pediatric and general otolaryngologists and can be a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. This course will discuss a systematic approach to the evaluation and management of aerodigestive tract foreign bodies, a problem frequently seen by both general and pediatric otolaryngologists. A combination of didactic presentation and case discussions will be utilized to review important aspects of history and physical examination, radiologic studies, and current techniques for the endoscopic evaluation and management of aerodigestive tract foreign bodies. Several case examples of challenging airway and esophageal foreign bodies will be reviewed. Many clinical pearls for managing difficult foreign body cases will be offered. The important role of the otolaryngologist in the prevention of foreign body ingestion and aspiration will be emphasized.
