Melanoma Pathology

Melanoma Pathology

Melanoma is a malignant tumor of the melanocytes, representing a small fraction of skin cancer cases, but it is responsible for most skin cancer deaths due to its aggressive nature and high metastatic potential. The incidence of melanoma has been rising, influenced by factors such as UV exposure and genetic predisposition. Early detection is crucial and relies on clinical examination, dermatoscopy, and histopathological analysis following a biopsy. The prognosis of melanoma varies significantly based on the stage at diagnosis, with localized disease having a high survival rate and metastatic melanoma associated with poor outcomes.Treatment of melanoma depends highly on the stage at diagnosis. Early-stage melanoma tumors are primarily managed with wide local excision and may include sentinel lymph node biopsy for intermediate- and high-risk tumors. Advanced stages may require complete lymph node dissection; systemic therapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors or targeted therapies; and possibly radiation for palliative care. The advent of novel therapies, particularly in immunotherapy and targeted treatments, has significantly improved outcomes for patients with advanced melanoma, underscoring the importance of continued research and clinical trials. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ histopathology skills and knowledge necessary for the effective diagnosis and management of malignant melanoma. Participants gain a deeper insight into the tumor’s evolutionary pathways, biopsy techniques, and treatment strategies, which are essential for managing melanoma. Greater competence prepares learners to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients with melanoma.
