Ménière Disease: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Management (AMW2023)

Ménière Disease: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Management (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Otolaryngologists are often first-line evaluators of breathing and airway-related issues in patients. Dyspnea and stridor may result from a variety of causes, and the importance of the otolaryngologists role in performing upper airway evaluation cannot be overemphasized. The clinical entities of paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder (PVFMD), vocal cord dyfunction (VCD), and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) are both commonly encountered and yet often misunderstood reasons for patients dyspnea complaints. This course provides a multi-disciplinary case-based approach to these entities, including perspective from both laryngology and speech-language pathology experts. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing diagnostic clues to help identify this entity, discussing pros and cons of various types of diagnostic testing, and reviewing what treatment options otolaryngologists can provide for these patients. Recommendations for patient counseling and guidance of expectations will also be reviewed. Understanding, identifying, and managing PVFM/EILO is critical to optimize patient care, improve patients symptoms, and avoid unnecessary tests or interventions.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Describe various potential contributing factors/causes for suspected PVFM/EILOOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Describe various potential contributing factors/causes for suspected PVFM/EILOOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Review treatment options and expectations for suspected PVFM/EILOBACKGROUND STATEMENT: This panel addresses an identified knowledge gap at the AAO.
