PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Facial pain and/or pressure is one of the most frequent complaints presenting to otolaryngologists. The differential diagnoses are numerous and varied. In this presentation, through case-based examples, our multi-subspecialty panel will discuss the key clinical features, workup, and management of the most common causes of facial pain and/or pressure. In particular, we will review the various clinical manifestations of migraine and key aspects of treatment. Our panel will also address other types of primary headache disorder that can present with facial pain and/or pressure, such as hemicrania continua. We will discuss common rhinologic causes of facial pain and/or pressure, with a focus on those that typically have relatively unremarkable endoscopies, such as recurrent acute rhinosinusitis and the inhalant allergy patient with mild sinus disease on imaging. With these rhinologic cases, we will focus in particular on diagnosis/workup and variations in management of these patients. Our panel aims to provide information relevant to the comprehensive and subspecialty otolaryngologist, advanced practice provider, and otolaryngologist in-training, on how to recognize and manage these common but often challenging diagnoses.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Recognize different clinical manifestations of migraine and form a treatment plan.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Describe other types of primary headache disorder that can present with facial pain and/or pressure.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Identify common rhinologic causes of facial pain and/or pressure with an unremarkable endoscopy and describe different aspects of workup and management in these cases.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Need for a better understanding of how to recognize and manage causes of facial pain and/or pressure that are common and otolaryngologists have the opportunity to treat but may routinely refer.
