Milk-Alkali Syndrome

Milk-Alkali Syndrome

Milk-alkali syndrome manifests through the triad of symptoms of elevated calcium levels, metabolic alkalosis, and acute kidney injury. Historically associated with the consumption of large quantities of milk and bicarbonate for peptic ulcer treatment, the syndrome is now predominantly triggered by excessive intake of calcium carbonate, particularly among osteoporosis patients or those with chronic kidney disease. Recent reports indicate a rising incidence, likely due to the widespread use of over-the-counter calcium supplements, particularly in older adults. Without intervention, the syndrome can rapidly progress to acute renal failure and metastatic calcification, potentially resulting in irreversible organ damage, especially in cases where the syndrome remains undetected or untreated over time. This activity equips learners with evidence-based strategies for managing milk-alkali syndrome, emphasizing the importance of individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs and circumstances. By collaborating with interprofessional colleagues, participants learn to integrate pharmacological interventions, dietary modifications, and supportive care measures to optimize patient outcomes and mitigate the risk of complications such as acute renal failure and metabolic disturbances. Additionally, through ongoing dialogue and knowledge exchange within the interdisciplinary team, clinicians enhance their critical thinking skills and expand their interprofessional competence, ultimately fostering a collaborative approach to patient care that prioritizes holistic assessment, patient-centered interventions, and continuous quality improvement.
