Mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) is a condition characterized by the involuntary leakage of urine, encompassing symptoms of both stress and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence involves urine leakage triggered by physical exertion or increased intraabdominal pressure (eg, coughing, sneezing, or exercising). Urge incontinence, on the other hand, is marked by a sudden, intense need to urinate, followed by involuntary urine loss. MUI is particularly prevalent in women older than 65, affecting >37% of older female patients, and often necessitates significant lifestyle changes due to its impact on both physical and psychosocial well-being.The condition can lead to various health issues, including skin infections, increased risk of falls, and significant psychological distress. Quality of life is often substantially diminished, with patients experiencing depression, anxiety, social isolation, and sexual dysfunction. The burden of MUI extends beyond the patients themselves, significantly affecting family caregivers and nursing facilities, with up to 10% of nursing home admissions in the United States attributed solely to urinary incontinence.Diagnosis of MUI typically involves a detailed clinical history and simple office tests, including urinalysis, postvoid residual urine volume measurement, and pelvic examinations. Treatment options range from conservative approaches (eg, lifestyle modifications and pelvic floor exercises) to more invasive interventions for cases unresponsive to initial treatments. Effective management of MUI often requires a collaborative effort from an interprofessional healthcare team to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying mixed urinary incontinence, implementing appropriate management, and collaborating with interprofessional team members to improve patient outcomes.
