Mumps, once a common childhood disease, is a contagious viral illness. With the widespread vaccination, the incidence of mumps in the population has decreased substantially. However, mumps outbreaks still occur among unvaccinated people and in universities and other close-knit communities. Mumps infection typically presents with a prodrome of headache, fever, fatigue, anorexia, and malaise, followed by the classic hallmark of the disease, parotitis. Common complications of mumps include orchitis, oophoritis, mastitis, pancreatitis, encephalitis, and aseptic meningitis. The combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine has been a part of the routine childhood vaccine schedule in the United States for many decades, and childhood measles-mumps-rubella vaccine coverage is high. This activity describes the etiology, pathophysiology, and presentation of mumps and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management. In addition, this activity empowers clinicians with knowledge and tools to educate patients and caregivers on the benefits of vaccination against mumps.
