Navigating Family Planning During Residency

Navigating Family Planning During Residency

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open finds that medical trainees do not view residency or fellowship programs as being supportive of family building or parenting. Given the challenges of balancing medical training and family building, many physicians choose to delay childbearing until the completion of postgraduate training. In this live Q&A, Emily Cleveland Manchanda, MD, MPH, and Megan Janeway, MD join host Jodi Abbott, MD, MSc, MHCM to discuss barriers, risks, and opportunities for physicians and medical trainees when self-advocating around pregnancy and parental leave. The panel will also share helpful resources, personal experiences, and information to consider when selecting a training program. Emily Cleveland Manchanda, MD, MPH is the Director for Social Justice Education and Implementation within the Center for Health Equity at the American Medical Association (AMA), and an emergency physician at Boston Medical Center. Megan Janeway, MD is a trauma and acute care surgeon at Boston Medical Center. She is also one of the founding members of Socially Responsible Surgery, a national organization working towards surgical equity. Jodi Abbott, MD, MSc, MHCM, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and Medical Director for the American Medical Association (AMA) Ed Hub.
