The American Red Cross has collaborated with the Association of Women s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) to develop an innovative option for neonatal resuscitation training that addresses the management of the newborn both in and out of the traditional delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The blended learning Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS): Comprehensive course will help expand both the reach and access to scientifically validated training across the healthcare continuum. The NALS: Comprehensive course is geared toward clinicians who are present at a birth or involved in the care of a newborn who may require resuscitation from initial steps through post-resuscitation care. The course features a realistic case approach that challenges participants critical thinking and decision-making skills in an engaging, active learning experience. Participants are presented with cases that require them to quickly assess the newborn, analyze the data presented, and determine appropriate next steps. Cases bridge the gap between theory and practice, with assessment and remediation provided to encourage more profound, more meaningful learning that builds skills and confidence. NALS Comprehensive: Incorporates an adaptive learning approach with an optional pre-assessment allowing participants to focus only on foundational content where additional learning may be needed prior to progressing to the comprehensive neonatal cases. Combines evidence-based interventions, psychomotor skills and high-reliability principles with critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to equip clinicians with the necessary tools for effective intervention. Participants in the comprehensive learner s course will learn and be assessed on the following topics: planning and preparation for birth, initial care interventions, positive pressure ventilation, alternative airways including LMA and ETT, chest compressions, vascular access, medication and fluid administration, post-resuscitation care and ethical and legal considerations. Special situations include the preterm newborn, complications associated with resuscitation, conditions impacting resuscitation (such as congenital heart defects), sepsis and resuscitation post-birth.
