Neonatal Advanced Life Support: Foundations

Neonatal Advanced Life Support: Foundations

The American Red Cross has collaborated with the Association of Women s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) to develop a new and innovative option for neonatal resuscitation training that addresses the management of the newborn both in an out of the traditional delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The blended learning Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS): Foundations course will help expand both the reach and access to scientifically validated training across the healthcare continuum. The course is designed to meet the needs of clinicians who may be present at a birth or involved in the care of a newborn who may require resuscitation while awaiting the arrival of an advanced resuscitation team The NALS Foundations course: Utilizes a traditional learning model and is designed to provide a solid understanding of foundational concepts in neonatal resuscitation. Combines evidence-based interventions, psychomotor skills and high-reliability principles with critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to equip clinicians with the necessary tools for effective intervention. Addresses the management of the newborn both in an out of the traditional delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) including the emergency department, birthing centers and in emergency medical services (EMS) settings. Topics include planning and preparation for birth, initial care interventions, positive pressure ventilation, laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion and the insertion of an orogastric tube.
