The Purpose of this knowledge based, on-demand, online content is for Pharmacy teams, Pharmacists and Technicians within the VHA practice at the top level of their licenses and stay up to date managing first-episode psychosis and schizophrenia. Pharmacy teams require additional education to expand their knowledge regarding schizophrenia as pharmacy practice is changing within the VA system and to remain current on VA policies and practice changes related to emerging literature and drug therapy management. Over the last few years, updated psychosis and schizophrenia guidelines have been published. The scope of pharmacy practice continues to expand within the VA, and it is important for pharmacy teams to acquire additional education and develop skills for managing treatment of first-episode psychosis and schizophrenia. Collaborative Medication Management is a coordinated team approach to healthcare delivery where it maximizes the expertise of pharmacy teams and providers or other prescribers to achieve optimal patient outcomes through appropriate medication use and enhanced patient care services. Literature supports the value of pharmacy team involvement in improving health outcomes and reducing health costs. New VA-DOD guidelines for management of first-episode psychosis and schizophrenia were published in 2023. These guidelines differ from the previously released guidelines from the 2020 American Psychiatric Association guidelines and the 2019 British Association for Psychopharmacy on the treatment of patients with schizophrenia and side effect management. It is important for learners to evaluate these differences and apply evidence-based treatment plans. Changing models also require a change in the way continuing education needs evolve. It is no longer a one-size fits all approach to education, but the learner s needs must be assessed in order to target the appropriate audience with ability to determine and utilize relevant information. Many university-based programs are equipped to oversee this process and ensure that continuing education needs are delivered in the best possible manner for the audience. This approach is especially helpful for non-university sites with the benefit of university affiliations such as the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
