The tween and teen years are stages of transformative development. Yet, this critical period of growth and puberty increases the risk of nutrient inadequacy, exacerbated by decreased dietary quality. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified several important nutrient gaps in adolescents, noting a constellation of potential nutritional risk factors that are considered a public health challenge. Adolescence is also a unique life stage in which many external factors impact diet quality, including increased independence and food choice, peer pressure, and significant shifts in eating patterns providing opportunities for greater scientific understanding of teens dietary needs and behaviors and how these established behaviors can have a lasting impact on health throughout the lifespan. Nutrient adequacy during the adolescent life stage plays a role in physical development, academic performance, and immune function, while also impacting the transition of overall health into adulthood, including fertility and conception. Healthy eating behaviors are foundational to adolescent health by providing the nutrients needed to fuel activity, empower learning, and optimize growth while also establishing lifelong positive eating habits. We hope you will join us for this scientific dialogue with medical professionals and scientists from academic centers around the country.
