During the rollout of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) expansion required by the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act (VACAA), it was evident that 58 VA sites had unacceptably low levels of GME occurring. Sites with no or low GME activity were surveyed regarding barriers with one main barrier identified as lack of faculty teaching skills and confidence. In partnership with the Office of Rural Health, the Office of Academic Affiliations is implementing a pilot program, the Rural Interprofessional Faculty Development Initiative (RIFDI) whereby eligible sites support two clinical educators from their site to participate in a two-year faculty development program geared to improve faculty teaching skills and confidence to close this gap. This knowledge-based faculty development program incorporates several types of learning modalities, one of which is an online, asynchronous certificate program developed with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). It is anticipated that this course will greatly enhance the skills and competency of GME faculty.
