Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a pathological bone remodeling process in which the normal, dense endochondral bone of the otic capsule is replaced by one or more foci of irregularly laid spongy bone that subsequently hardens abnormally and impairs function; the condition most commonly involves the stapes region. This activity focuses on the evaluation and treatment of otosclerosis and delineates its pathology, emphasizing its characteristic features and the diagnostic challenges it presents due to minimal otoscopic findings. The role of the interprofessional team—encompassing otolaryngologists, audiologists, radiologists, and primary care physicians—in assessing and treating patients with this condition is also covered. Additionally, this session outlines contemporary approaches to managing otosclerosis-associated hearing loss, addressing medical and surgical interventions, including stapedectomy, hearing aids, and other rehabilitative options. Clinicians will gain an enhanced understanding of otosclerosis, improving their ability to diagnose, counsel, and manage patients with hearing impairment attributed to this condition effectively.
