PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This session will provide an in-depth review of the history and development of surgery for otosclerosis. The session will highlight the most current techniques for otosclerosis treatment and will instruct participants on the various nuances required to be a safe and successful stapes operation. The session will also discuss important considerations in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative management of patients with suspected otosclerosis. Special topics will include revision stapes surgery, cochlear otosclerosis, endoscopic stapes surgery, and complications related to stapes surgery. We will discuss research topics that may allow new treatment options for patients with otosclerosis.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Describe the evolution of surgical treatment for otosclerosis.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate proper patient selection and work-up, intra-operative decision-making, and techniques for avoiding complications.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Assess complications of stapes surgery, causes of failure, and revision stapes surgery.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The course has been continually improved and updated since initially presented by Howard House over 50 years ago. The course is designed to assist the novice and expert to improve their surgical skills. We continue to update the course introducing new techniques.
