As the majority of patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) report some degree of bowel urgency as a symptom of disease, it is imperative that routine symptom evaluation, outside of commonly used assessment scales, be part of comprehensive care for patients with CD. Health care professionals (HCPs) should screen for bowel urgency as it can be an indicator of uncontrolled bowel inflammation in patients with CD and it is also a patient priority in treatment due to its effect on quality of life (QoL). Limited data are available to support specific treatment options for improving bowel urgency in CD, but treatment options have improved bowel urgency symptoms in ulcerative colitis.
In this CMEO Outfitters recorded symposium, expert faculty discuss recognizing the frequency of bowel urgency in patients with CD and the impact on patient QoL, incorporating assessments for bowel urgency through symptom evaluation, and engaging patients in open communication about their bowel urgency as part of shared decision-making in order to improve clinical outcomes, and the faculty also review real-world patient cases.
