VHA Pharmacists are charged with ensuring medications are properly reviewed prior to administration in facilities, clinics, long care facilities and many other locations. New technology has provided pharmacists the ability to review orders prior to nursing staff administrating the medication utilizing bar code technology. In VA facilities Veteran patients are seen in many environments which medications are given. VA has the capability to use bar codes on medications to safely identify the right medication, the right route, right patient and the right time. Understanding how to use the technology and understand the medication workflows in the different arenas is crucial for safe medication administration to the patient. Knowledge of the workflow for pharmacists will ensure providers and nursing staff can safely order and administer medications in the clinic settings which will improve patient outcomes. This knowledge-based web-based training will provide and educate the participants on best practices in using bar code medication administration (BCMA) technology to provide safe medication administration beyond the inpatient setting. Clinic administration of medication will provide less medications and improved patient outcomes.
