Overcoming Obesity 2023 - Clinical Strategies to Improve Maternal Outcomes by Treating Obesity (Recorded)

Dr. Myriam Modestin-Sorrentino will speak on the need to raise awareness and understanding how the the obesity affects maternal and fetal health. First, she will discuss the history of the epidemiology of the history of obesity and pregnancy. She will discuss the physiology behind obesity in the pre and post partum periods and the necessity of practitioners to understand how obesity affects the co-morbidities of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia as well as gestational diabetes and the pregnancy of hypertension. She will discuss how this also relates to diverse populations and minorities, as they are more likely to have obesity. She will review obesity facts in female adolescents and women with an emphasis on minority women. She will review current facts in sleep, diet and physical activity in relation to minority women, and suggest current concepts in prevention in women of childbearing age. Dr. Marijane Hynes will focus on how obesity affects young women, and how we can help them reach realistic goals of weight loss and improvement in co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension. She will review the latest figures on weight loss and show how a weight loss of 10% can effect outcomes such as improved fertility, attaining a natural pregnancy as well as improvements in assisted reproduction. She will review data of new medications based on the percent weight loss achieved. She will show data both of medical and surgical outcomes and how they effect patients, particularly those with PCOS. She will discuss how to help patients decide between surgical and medical weight loss. She will review also data on processed foods and obesity and how those with lower incomes have difficulty affording healthy foods. She will also talk about the effect of highly processed foods on maternal and child obesity. They will both highlight specific needs for research in these populations (maternal and fetal outcomes), as well as recent legislation to improve outcomes.
