Recent AAP obesity guidelines point out that “watchful waiting” can delay treatment. Instead, they recommend to intervene sooner with intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment, pharmacotherapy and metabolic and bariatric surgery. This has stirred up concern from patients, families, media, and even medical professionals that this may be too aggressive. During this session, key statements from the AAP obesity clinical practice guidelines and the OMA pediatric obesity algorithm will be identified, evidence behind these recommendations will be reviewed, and common hesitancies, stigma and bias will be explored. The session will conclude with a case-based series to explore patient-family-provider scenarios and effective anecdotes.
