Pain Management in Dentistry: Opioids, Substance Use Disorders, and More

Pain Management in Dentistry: Opioids, Substance Use Disorders, and More

Nearly five years since the federal government declared the U.S. opioid epidemic as a public health emergency, the country continues to experience high rates of opioid related hospitalizations and overdose deaths. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the drug overdose epidemic, contributing to an increase in overdose deaths in nearly every state since April 2020. This version of the epidemic is driven by other drugs such as illicit fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, signaling a growing problem of substance use disorders and access to appropriate treatment. The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act (https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubs/docs/MATE_Training_Letter_Final.pdf), requires new or renewing Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrants, as of June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders, as well as the safe pharmacological management of dental pain. Participation in this activity can be used to fulfill the MATE Act requirements for prescribers. This online, self-paced workshop will include an overview of the opioid epidemic in North Carolina and provide learners with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively manage patients acute and chronic orofacial pain with consideration for known and possible substance use disorders. This web-based workshop satisfies the opioid continuing education requirement as per the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners. The content of this self-paced module is presented through didactics and a quiz to test for competence. This continuing education activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) through joint efforts between North Carolina Area Health Education Centers, NC Department of Health and Human Services (Division of Public Health), Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University , and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
