Palatoplasty: Modern Techniques, Historical Perspectives, and Its Use With Neurostimulation (AMW2023)

Palatoplasty: Modern Techniques, Historical Perspectives, and Its Use With Neurostimulation (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Carotid body tumors and paragangliomas of the neck are rare, mostly benign tumors. As otolaryngologists, we are asked to be leaders in the management algorithms for these complex patients. The goals of this lecture will be to define tumor characteristics and genetics in order to implement strategies for testing, treatment and surveillance. We will review associated imaging characteristics to recognize the likely origin and help define strategies for care for each site. Finally, we will review the indications for observation, radiation and surgery. Surgery will be reviewed with a detailed explanation and demonstration of key surgical landmarks and technical considerations, as well as post-operative care.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: To understand the genetics associated with inherited paragangliomas and to implement effective strategies for surveillance and treatment.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: To recognize common imaging characteristics of paragangliomas fo the neck in order to recognize the site of origin and determine treatment recommendations based on location.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: To compare different treatment modalities and examine key surgical landmarks and technical considerations.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The management of paragangliomas has evolved to include observation, radiation and surgery. Treatment algorithms are complex, especially in patients with multiple tumors at risk for cranial neuropathies. Surgical techniques and landmarks apply to the care of many otolaryngology patients.
