Paraphenylenediamine toxicity is an emerging public health concern in developing countries due to both intentional self-harm and accidental poisoning. Paraphenylenediamine is a common agent in hair dyes, and its concentration in these products is largely unregulated. Potential clinical manifestations may range from local toxicity, primarily with dermatologic presentations, to systemic toxicity, which could present as multiorgan failure and possibly death.Despite the potential for significant morbidity and mortality, clinician awareness remains largely low in developed countries. As there is currently no antidote for paraphenylenediamine, the mainstay of management is to have a high index of suspicion and to ensure early intervention and clinical support. As reported cases of toxicity rise, it becomes vital that healthcare professionals are educated regarding the potential dangers of this toxin. This activity aims to illuminate the etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentations, and underlying pathophysiology of paraphenylenediamine toxicology and also reviews the related management and preventive strategies. Participants are empowered with the necessary tools and expertise to ensure optimal patient care and to improve patient outcomes.
