Parathyroid Gland Identification: More Than Meets the Eye (2022 AMW)

Parathyroid Gland Identification: More Than Meets the Eye (2022 AMW)

The identification of parathyroid glands in thyroid and parathyroid surgery can be challenging, possibly leading to poor patient outcomes. Until recently, recognition of these glands relied solely on the surgeon’s ability to visually interpret the operative field. However, a number of technologies have emerged that are designed to aid in parathyroid gland identification and intraoperative decision making. Of these adjuvant approaches, parathyroid autofluorescence and angiography are the most widely studied and promising. This panel will focus on these fluorescence technologies and review their current state of utilization in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
