Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is frequently encountered in emergency departments. Intermittent episodes of palpitations with sudden onset and termination pose significant challenges in the diagnosis and management of this tachyarrhythmia due to its diverse presentations. In most patients, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is reported in the absence of underlying structural heart disease; it is the characteristic feature associated with atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia, atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia, and focal atrial tachycardia. This program reviews the evaluation and treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and the role of the interprofessional team in managing this condition. Participants explore the diverse clinical presentations of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, a comprehensive review of electrocardiographic findings, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including pharmacological interventions and nonpharmacological maneuvers to both terminate acute episodes and prevent their recurrence. Healthcare professionals from diverse specialties gain a deeper understanding of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and are better equipped to optimize patient care outcomes in the evolving landscape of cardiac rhythm disorders.
