This one-hour, on-demand, journal article-based activity reviews original qualitative research of patient perspectives regarding the discontinuation of buprenorphine for the streaming of opioid use disorder (OUD). Despite that buprenorphine is recommended as a standard care of treatment in OUD with positive health and addiction-related outcomes, half of patients discontinue medication use in the first year of treatment. According to the study, there are three main themes related to medication discontinuation: health system barriers, adverse medication effects, and patient motivations. This article provides patient perspectives around themes of discontinuation and offers several practitioner takeaways to enhance patient retention. .
