A measured patient experience has become one of the most important elements of a hospital’s performance. Patients are now researching hospital and provider satisfaction ratings to make sure others have had a positive experience prior to seeking medical care themselves. The CMS uses patient satisfaction score metrics to determine a significant portion of hospital payments as a result of the HCAHPS score. Today’s medical training model recognizes that medicine is a complex team sport. As the leader of the team, a provider must possess the ultimate communication skills to lead the team to victory and give attention to improving the patient experience.
In this activity, which is to be used as an annual review, we will cover the best practices of patient communication training, and provide a framework for practitioners to deliver consistent, compassionate care to patients in all healthcare settings. We explain why patient satisfaction techniques are critical in today’s healthcare environment, and introduce and describe the 10-Step PatientSET™ List, a consistent, systematic approach to patient encounters that is organized into three stages of care from the first impression to final closing and thank you of the patient experience. We provide video examples of both the wrong way and the correct way to communicate with patients during the stages of care. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: summarize the importance of Patient Satisfaction in today’s health care environment; demonstrate the 3 stages of Best Practice Patient Satisfaction; and apply the 10-Step Patient Satisfaction Communication Checklist to your daily practice.
