Pearls of Aging Voice Management (2022 AMW)

A person’s voice plays a critical role in how one is perceived in society and immensely effects one’s quality of life. It is estimated that 12-35% of older adults complain of hoarseness, although more than likely this is an underestimation. Furthermore, increasing number of the older individuals continue to be a part of the work force. Therefore, hoarseness not only results in social isolation and depression, but also loss of productivity. Hoarseness in the elderly can be due to many reasons, and presbylarynx is a diagnosis of elimination. This course will explain the complexities of diagnosing the older patient with hoarseness, and present the attendee with an algorithm to follow with regards to the work-up, as well as the surgical and non-surgical management of presbylarynx. Differences between presbylarynx and other common pathologies in the elderly, such as Parkinson’s disease, will be discussed. There are many different surgical techniques that can be employed in the treatment of presbylarynx, advantages and pitfalls of each will be discussed, as well as subtle technical details of each technique. Patient selection for various procedures, including in-office procedures will be detailed. In-office procedures have significant advantages and should be in the armamentarium of all otolaryngologists. The attendee will leave with a clear understanding of the aging voice and will get a chance to discuss cases with the presenters through this interactive course.
